This cruise features riveting narration by Harriet Witt, an international award winning astronomy writer and speaker. Her writing has been featured in publications such as Sky & Telescope, and Spirit of Aloha. She has been giving colorful and informative presentations on astronomy in Hawaii since 1990 and teaching "Making Friends With the Night Sky" classes at Maui Community College since 1992.
Adding to the magic in the winter months (December through April) is the opportunity to listen to the live, haunting songs of the humpback whales in the area, picked up via our underwater hydrophones and played on the speaker system on our vessel.

8. Ultimate Whalewatch

Come on deck and learn first hand what it is like to be a whale researcher on a personally guided group tour. This is a special opportunity to interact with our researchers and marine biologists. Your research adventure begins over a complimentary continental breakfast (bagels, muffins, fresh fruit, coffee and tea) in the Ocean Science Discovery classroom. Your small group will gather for a 45 minute enriching presentation from a member of the Pacific Whale Watch Research Team about our research locations and how we photograph and study whales in the wild.
You then embark on a 2 hour whale watch tour with a member of our Research Team. Our researchers share their knowledge of whale behavior, and interpret the significance and purpose of Humpback social activity within the context of season and location. The tour is completed with a final 45 minute informative session at the research lab where guests can interact with members from the PWF research team and learn about their ongoing research in Hawaii, Australia, and Ecuador. Each tour guest will receive a CD of all of the professional photos taken during your Ultimate Whale Watch, some favorite stock photos from Pacific Whale catalog, an ultimate whale watch booklet, a Why Whales Do That CD, a bumper sticker, and a free whale poster. Join Pacific Whale Foundation researcher Annie Macie and noted wildlife photographer Monica Sweet on a whalewatch photo safari from 6:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. aboard the Ocean Explorer from Lahaina Harbor. With a capacity of just 49 passengers, and stadium style seating, this vessel is a favorite of wildlife photographers year-round. Participants will get hands-on training with state-of-the-art digital cameras from Canon and will receive a DVD of all images and video collected during the safari. Participants will receive expert advice on capturing whale images and learn about utilizing the latest digital photo techniques and data storage. Please bring your cameras.
